Principal's Report
Welcome to our Term 2, Week 4 newsletter.
Visiting Classes During the Day
Our classrooms are busy places with lots of learning happening each and every day! I would like to remind all parents and community members, that should you need to drop lunches, notes, hats or messages to your child or would like to speak with the classroom teacher during the school day to make sure they do so through the school office. School office staff will make sure these get to your child without interrupting the classroom learning.

WA Student Assistance Payments
Don’t forget that the second round of Student Assistance Payments are available until Friday 4th July. Parents and carers of eligible students can claim $250 for each secondary student, and $150 for each primary school or Kindergarten student.
Your child’s WA Student Number (WASN) is an 8-digit number and is sometimes called a SCSA or student number. This number can be found on the front page of our school reports, the top of your child’s NAPLAN report, or on a student’s SmartRider if they have a student card. Please contact Spearwood Primary School office and we will be able to assist you with the information required - 9414 2300.
Student Assistance Payment is available to claim within the ServiceWA app.
Details on eligibility requirements and how to claim can be found on the website:
https://www.education.wa.edu.au/wasap
Date Change
The Winter Lightning Carnival will now be taking place on Friday 27th June whilst Room 16 Assembly will now be taking place on Friday 4th July.
Changes to our Attendance Messaging Service
Spearwood Primary School will be transitioning to a new system. This means all Attendance SMS messages will soo come from a new contact SPS.
The new system will notify parents, guardians, and caregivers of unexplained absences or late arrivals.
What will change for Parents?
The new system starts on Tuesday, 17th June 2025. It will send parents an SMS on their mobile phone when their child is marked absent without an explanation.
Parents should delete the old Absentee SMS number to avoid confusion. They should not use it to communicate with the school.
This is a sample message below. Parents will get this SMS with the link if their child is marked absent without an explanation. Parents should use this link to add attendance notes about their child’s absence. Please note that the link will be valid for only 48 hours. Do not reply to this message via SMS as the school will not receive it. The school will receive your response via the link provided. Ensure the phone is connected to an Internet data plan or has WIFI access to use the hyperlink.

If the child is absent again without a prior explanation, parents will get a new one-time link.
If parents do not use the link provided, they can notify the school of their child’s absence via telephone or email.
If you have any other questions regarding the Attendance SMS Communications, please contact the school office on 9414 2300.
School Photos
School Photos will be taking place on Wednesday 4th June. Students will be bringing home information today on how to order. Please do not lose this information as it is individualised to each student. Should you happen to misplace the ordering information, please contact the school office on 9414 2300. Further information will be posted on Connect.
Life Education
Life Education sessions will be taking place on Thursday 5 June and Friday 6 June for students in PP to Year 6. Keep an eye on your emails for information through Consent2Go.

National Simultaneous Storytime
Our Kindergarten class watched the live stream of the reading of the book "The Truck Cat" while Ms Korczynskyj followed along with the hard copy version. This enabled the children to make connections between television and literacy. We enjoyed pretending to pat cats as they went up, down, under and over along with the story. We then shared stories of our experiences of cats before embarking on a craft activity. Each child made a cardboard truck, with wheels that worked thanks to a simple but clever axle design and improved our fine motor skills as we wound wool around cardboard cats to decorate them.
All the cats enjoyed their rides zooming all around the classroom.

Highway Heroes Assembly

Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome to an update regarding the Highway Heroes Program here at Spearwood Primary School.
Mrs Helen Davidson, the co-creator of Highway Heroes Best Programs 4 Kids (Behavioural, Emotional, Social Skills and Training) will be attending the assembly and giving a short presentation about the fabulous program and the importance of social and emotional skills development in children.
You are invited to attend the whole school assembly on Friday 23rd of May at 8:45am in the under covered area.
We are extremely grateful and appreciative that Helen is so graciously giving up her time to attend our school on Friday to share her wealth of knowledge with you all.
Each class will be presenting a Highway Hero performance that will showcase some of the different skills and knowledge they have been learning throughout the year.
Whilst we have all been working on Module 2, Connecting for Friendships-Playground resilience and Wisdom, all classes will be presenting different components of the module.

We are very excited to showcase this program to you and hope to see parents from all classes across the school attend this special assembly and take the opportunity to listen to Helen Davidson speak about Highway Heroes.
We look forward to your attendance to the Highway Hero assembly on Friday 23rd May.
Thank you and Kindest Regards
Mrs Lisa Miller
